La muerte que no avisa. / The Death That Doesn’t Warn.

La muerte que no avisa. / The Death That Doesn’t Warn.

Esa muerte no respeta despedidas.

Ojalá no hayas sentido miedo.

There is a death that doesn’t hurt because of what it takes, but because of what it leaves unsaid.

It isn’t death itself that keeps me awake. It’s its impossible punctuality, its way of arriving without an appointment, without knocking on the door, without giving us the bare minimum of time that every goodbye deserves. It’s that death that doesn’t announce itself, the one that slips through any corner of an ordinary Tuesday, while someone still has plans for the weekend.

They say the saddest thing is dying. I believe the saddest thing is not knowing when. Because the one who leaves doesn’t suffer the absence: we do, those of us who stay behind with the words stuck in our throats, with the embraces still pending, with that conversation we never had because «there will be time.»

The worst death is the one that comes by surprise. The one from the accident, the silent heart attack, the «it all happened so fast.» That death doesn’t respect goodbyes. It doesn’t allow the last coffee, or the last call, or that last «take care» said with your heart in your hands. It simply arrives, and with a dry blow turns an everyday «see you later» into a «never again» that no one signed.

And then you start to remember. You remember the times you could have stayed a little longer and didn’t. You remember the times you hung up the phone in a hurry. You remember the messages you left unanswered thinking there would be a thousand chances later. And you understand, with a lucidity that hurts, that there weren’t. That life doesn’t guarantee second chances, much less third ones.

Because the pain isn’t in death. It’s in the silence it leaves behind. In the empty chair. In the number no one answers anymore. In the «I love you» that stayed locked in your chest, waiting for the perfect moment that never came.

If I could have one more second with you, uncle, I wouldn’t spend it on grand speeches. I would spend it on the essential, on what truly matters when there’s no time left:

I love you.

Not the way you say it in passing, but the way you say it when you know it’s the last time. With your eyes, with your hands, with everything I didn’t know how to say before.

I wish you all the best.

Wherever you are, I hope you’re at peace. I hope you didn’t feel afraid. I hope, if anything hurt, it was brief. I wish you all the best, even though I can no longer give it to you myself.

Be happy.

That’s what I would ask of you. That you be happy wherever you go, as you were happy here with us, even if we didn’t always tell you. That you know you left a mark. That you know we remember you. That you know that, even though you left without warning, you will never truly be gone.

One second. Just one more second. And then, with a broken voice and my soul in my hands:

Goodbye, uncle.

Thank you for everything you gave me without me knowing how to ask for it. Thank you for being there. Thank you for being.

I wish I had known that day was the last. I wish I had said all of this before.

But death doesn’t warn. And that, uncle, is what hurts the most.

¡Escapar y no verte más! / Escape and Never See You Again!

¡Escapar y no verte más! / Escape and Never See You Again!
No volver a verte, vida mía,
Quiero escapar y no volver a verte,

I've got this mad, wild longing to escape,
to leave behind the life I chose one day
when I was young and couldn't see the shape
of all the dreams I sold and gave away.
I want a magic door, a hidden seam,
a passage tucked inside the bedroom wall,
to carry me far off from this bad dream,
to the other side of the world, beyond it all.
To never see you again, my life, my fate,
to never face this room, this mirror's stare,
where my own cowardice lies in wait
and the tired ghost of who I was lives there.
I ask myself, lying in the half-light,
if someone as wretched as I've become,
so broken, tired, and burnt out of light,
still deserves a little of the sun.
Does hope remain for one who hopes no more?
Can someone shine who never shone before?
Or is it just a phantom, nothing more,
a trick the heart plays when it's at death's door?
I want to escape and never see you again,
leave my name written in a last goodbye,
cross the sea, erase myself, and then
be someone else, with no memory, no tie.
And yet, here I stay, upon the shore,
watching the horizon, never leaving,
asking the wind if life still holds in store
something for me worth the breath I'm breathing.

Quiero morir a los 40. / I Want to Die at 40.

Quiero morir a los 40. / I Want to Die at 40.
Tengo cuarenta inviernos en la espalda
y apenas sé quién soy sin tu mirada.
Te di mis primaveras, una a una,
y tú me devolviste el alma helada.
Te entregué lo que nadie me pidió,
te di mi fe, mi miedo y mi costumbre,

I carry forty winters on my back
and barely know who I am without your gaze.
I gave you all my springs, one by one,
and you handed back a soul wrapped up in haze.
I handed over what no one had asked,
my faith, my fear, my every worn-out way,
and when I finally woke, the only thing left
was your absence casting shadows on my day.
I lost so many windows, so many trains,
so many "I love you"s I never said in time,
that now I look behind and only find
the ashes of a love that once was mine.
Forty. An even number, softly made
of a four and a ten I never celebrated.
Four decades being everyone's shelter,
and not one shelter where I was awaited.
I owe this world nothing anymore.
I gave my bones, my time, my only song.
I was balm, handkerchief, harbor, shield,
and no one was my harbor, right or wrong.
The sun no longer moves me, nor consoles me
knowing there's another day to come.
I only want this labyrinth to end,
this feeling without feeling, this being numb.
I want to die at forty, want to close
my eyes upon a number whole and true,
because to live without belonging to anyone,
is to die every day, slow and askew.
It's not rage, not revenge, not defeat:
it's that I owe myself to no one now.
I gave everything I had, and in the end,
I only ask for silence, and that's how.

Canción para los negativos. / Song for the Negative Ones.

Canción para los negativos. / Song for the Negative Ones.

yo canto, yo sambo, yo abrazo,
porque el alma no se rinde,
porque el ritmo es más fuerte,
porque el amor siempre vence,
aunque los negativos no piensen.

Every morning when I rise,
same old walk under gray skies,
violence on the screen, hate online,
and my soul just begs for peace of mind, you know?

But I won't let the rhythm go,
won't let the noise swallow my soul,
life is more than that fake TV show,
there's fire in my chest, there's a revolution's glow.

I go to work without a flame,
just a cog in a senseless game,
stress that burns, toxins in the air,
the world's on fire and I'm not sure if we still care.

The old judge the young who just begin,
the scholar looks down on the one who can't fit in,
the walker hates the one who rides the bus,
sneakers against ties, corsets against us.

But I won't let the rhythm go,
won't let the noise swallow my soul,
life is more than that fake TV show,
there's fire in my chest, there's a revolution's glow.

I lose my energy watching endless blame,
those with power plant a garden of shame,
thorns so others stumble and fall,
while the poor just search for bread to feed them all.

Energy abused, the planet screams,
corruption rains down, truth fades like dreams,
ego on every billboard sign,
neither church nor state can untwist that line.

I won't let the rhythm go,
won't let the noise swallow my soul,
life is more than that fake TV show,
there's fire in my chest, there's a revolution's glow!

And even if the world falls apart,
I sing, I sway, I hold my heart,
'cause the soul will never surrender,
'cause the beat is so much tender,
'cause love will always find a way,
even the negative ones.
